Hi Folks:
The Fall/Winter ’19 Issue’s “Test Your Memory” we said would be
easy and it appears to have been semi-easy, but no one answered the
questions 100% right. Some may very well have been correct, but
this was before the Editor’s time!!!! and could not be verified .
We asked:
“Who was this handsome man?”
“What was his position at HHS?”
“What honor was bestowed upon him by the
students?”
“What year was this honor presented”
We had four people attempt to make their best educated
guesses.
Betsy Lane Mercer ’62 wrote in to say that “Hi Patty, here I TEST YOUR
am again taking a shot RE: some of these questions on “Test MEMORY
Your Memory”. Joseph Dobbins, uncle of Maryellen McCluskey RESULTS
and Joseph Dobbins, friends and classmates, St. Mary’s School,
1958 and HHS, 1962. Mr Dobbins was a much-liked teacher of
Problems of Democracy in the Social Studies Department at HHS.
The honor presented to him by his students was Teacher of the Year
in 1965. I also remember he was a graduate of Colby College where
he played baseball and he coached baseball at HHS for several years.”
To Mr. Joseph Dobbins, whose example of good sportsmanship,
Carl Beaulieu ’53 emailed and said that ”This was an easy one, Joe Dobbins. Everyone loved him, especially the
understanding and patience and whose friendship is one of the most
girls. Between classes , he always had a girl or two chatting with him. I think he taught algebra.”
treasured memories of each of us, we, the class of 1955, of HOULTON
HIGH SCHOOL dedicate the NORTH STAR.
Pauline McGillicuddy `51 called our secretary, Patty Fitzpatrick ’63 and said the same things that Carl
stated.
Mary Peabody ’62 contacted us to say “The person being recognized is Joe Dobbins. He was a math teacher, I
believe. I do not recall the honor, or the year it was presented. I am guessing it was the 60’s.”
All were great guesses as far as they went, but no one got them all.
ANSWERS:
• All got this right. The gentleman is Joe Dobbins,
• Carl, Pauline, and Mary got this one right. He was a math teacher as far as the timeline of this test. Betsy
may very well be correct in her Social Studies answer as he may very well have switched programs later,
• A class honored him by dedicating their yearbook to him and,
• The Year was 1955.
Betsy was sort of on the right track. She may have been right about teaching Democracy in the 60’s. He was sort of
honored as Teacher of the Year by his students by dedicating their yearbook to him and she gave a solid year for the
honor even if it was not the correct year for this quiz.
Betsy, we give you the for the Fall/Winter 2019 issue.
