estate planning. He became a partner in the practice in 2005 and spent the next
dozen years serving the legal needs of many people in the greater Houlton area and
beyond.
Dedicated and hard working - he had (and continues to have) a big impact on our
small town. During this time, Steve shared his talents through volunteer work,
including with the following organizations: Houlton Rotary, Houlton Lodge of
Elks, Houlton Water Company (director), Houlton Community Golf Club (clerk
and board member), Houlton Regional Hospital (treasurer and trustee), Aroostook
Bar Association (treasurer), Maine Supreme Court Civil Rules Committee, Maine
State Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Committee, and President of the
Maine State Bar Association.
In 2018, Governor Paul LePage nominated Steve for a judicial position as a District
Court judge. Steve served as the resident district court trial judge for Houlton
and Presque Isle from April of 2018 until January of 2020, when Governor Janet
Mills nominated him to serve as the Superior Court Justice for Aroostook County.
Steve was sworn in as a Superior Court Justice on January 30, 2020, and will be
responsible for conducting the jury trials for the County. “Although I miss my
clients and working with Gary and ad, it has truly been an honor to serve as a trial
judge.”
Steve and Janel live in Houlton, with their two boys - Elias (14) and Ian (11), two
horses, two cats and a sweet rescue pup named Lily. The whole family enjoys hiking, camping and spending time in the woods. Steve looks
forward to an annual winter climb of Mt. Katahdin, reconnecting with high school friends, sharing laughs and reminiscing about old
times.
NEWS FROM THE NET
By Fred Grant ’88
How thankful are you now for the internet?! I know I am! Many of us would not have been
able to continue working during COVID19 without all the great online tools available to us.
Additionally, many people have taken time through the quarantine to connect (virtually) with
friends and family through Facetime, Zoom, Hangouts, Facebook and so much more. We have had the opportunity to find out
thatwe CAN have meetings without physically being in the same location, saving us hundreds, if not thousands, of hours on
the road.
We have a new "normal" and hopefully these benefits of technology will allow us to be more present, save time and be more
efficient long after the quarantine ends. Speaking of technology - The Houlton Alumni Association has excellent resources
for connecting with your friends from high school. Whether looking for an old flame, an old friend or even a past teacher
- HoultonAlumni.com can help! Be sure to register on the site and connect with your class if you have not already. You can
also consider planning a "virtual reunion" through the site. Classmates can plan and coordinate an online meeting to help
stay connected. Maybe a cocktail hour for the class or a get-to- gether of just a few friends - it is all possible. Once we can
congregate in larger numbers you may even want to consider hosting a multi-year reunion in "your neck of the woods". With
HoultonAlumni.com you can also connect with fellow alum who may have graduated from a different class year but live near
you. What better way to stay connected than to meet those fellow graduates in your own area?
Not sure how to begin? Feel free to give me a call or drop me a line. You can reach me at the WHOU office at 207-532-3600
and I can be reached at fred@whoufm.com.
Until next time - I will see you on "the net"!
Take care,
Fred
