Hi Folks:
The Spring ’19 Issue’s “Test Your Memory”
we said would be hard and indeed it was. TEST YOUR
MEMORY
We asked: RESULTS
“What was this structure?”
“What year was this taken?”
We gave a hint of some HHS
Graduates from the year and…
“What was the result of this fire?”
We had three brave people attempt
to make their best educated guesses.
Joyce Peabody Mitchell ’45 said she thought it was the de Merchant(Merchant??) Hotel and it might
have been in the mid-forties.
She couldn’t remember if it burned before she moved to Houlton and started HS in 1945.
In her response to the photo she also furnished an interesting bit of history in that she recently saw a picture in
the North Star News of the Drive-In Theater on North Street. She explained that it brought back memories as her
father, Harold A. Peabody ’25 established the theater and it was the first one north of Bangor.
Fred Grant ’88 wrote in to say that he thought it might be Wording Hall at RCI.
Jeffery Bubar ‘57 contacted President Ketch and during the conversation stated that he thought it too, was
Wording Hall in March of 1944.
All were great guesses given how hard this issue’s quiz was, but all were not correct.
ANSWER
• The photo is of the devastating fire of the Exchange Hotel.
• The fire was in 1942. The hints given were the names of some of the 1942 high school
graduates.
• There was a terrible result of this fire. Two folks perished in the fire.
Joyce was on the right track so Joyce, we give you the
for this issue’s quiz
Don’t forget to play this issue’s “Test Your Memory!”
