From the Houlton Pioneer Times Files
– 1972 School Trip Photo
Editor’s Note: Former Houlton High School French teacher and Houlton Alum, Eugene Jackins ’52, sent in this photo along with a brief narrative
and asked if we would share it with our association membership and we are glad to do so. It is fitting that this trip was in 1972 and many of the
students were in the Class of ’72 and can reminisce about this during their 50th reunion this summer.
I would like to have you add the enclosed group photo to your next newsletter if possible.
I am hoping that many of the former students of mine in the photo are still alive and members of the Alumni Association.
This year was my first student group trip that I had taken to Europe. I chose the February vacation week for travel. It was Okay in Europe ,
but we came home in big snowstorm and had to stay overnight in Bangor.
We visited London and its suburbs, crossed the English Channel and then in Paris and its suburbs. From there we took trips outside of the
city as well – opening a new world for these students.
Gathered in front of the school bus Friday as they were ready to board for the first lap of their journey to
Bangor and then on a jet flight to London and France, are several Houlton High School students and their adult
supervisor, Eugene Jackins, on the extreme right of the picture. Students making the week-long trip are Susan
Johnston, Sharon Swimm, Doug Thompson, Paul Bither, Dana Gallison, Debbie Jackins, Tammy Campbell, Linda
Wilson, Ann Hay, Barbara Williams, Diane Stewart, Susan Rogers, Dawn Scott, Judy Gentle, Bob Moran, Judi
Brown, Vicki Estabrook, Karen Levesque, Heidi Stone, Dorinda McCluskey, Mary Gormley, Sheryl Williams and
Shawn Snell
