How Houltonopoly Touched One Family
“This summer when our two grandsons, Jonah, nine and Sebastian, seven (Jonathan Bossie HHS ‘93) were here visiting from
Abu Dhabi, UAE, we played Houltonopoly. They were familiar with Monopoly so it was an easy transition. They loved the
fact that when we drove through town they recognized the business names from the game. As we drove by they would say
“that’s on the board of Houltonoply”! Two of their favorites were Andy’s Igga (IGA) and Whoofam (WHOUFM)! They also
were intrigued by the tokens, (Gateway Bridge, 32 Below Ice Cream Truck, Town Clock). They also thought that McDonald’s
Drive Thru on the game was pretty clever. They spent many hours playing and we kept it set up from day to day. There was so
much talk of the game that I decided to make a scavenger hunt using the businesses on the game. They each had a copy of the
scavenger hunt, a clipboard, and a pencil. We started in Market Square ticking off the boxes as we went. We then crossed the
Gateway Bridge, went up North Street, down Washburn Street to Highland Avenue, across the bridge to Mechanic Street, to
Monument Park (McGill’s band), down Military Street to the post office (WHOUFM), then on to Kendall Street (Coles) and
back to the square! We drove by the other businesses (too far to walk) to mark them off. It was a fun way to familiarize them
with the town. The prize for finding and recognizing them all was a stop at the Houlton Farms Dairy Bar for a favorite treat!
What a fun game! Well done Houlton Alumni Association! Thanks for the inspiration.”
