Association’s Endowment Program

The Houlton High School Alumni Association
(HHSAA) has come a long way since 1997, and it
is important that you, our members and alumni,
be updated on and thanked for your support. As
HHSAA has many programs going on, it is nice to
review them occasionally. Let’s start with how our
Endowment Program stands as of September 30th,
2022. Reminder, you are always welcome to make
donations to these funds at any time, but please
remember to make a note as to the fund you wish to
have it go toward.
The Endowment Program continues to grow with
your generous donations and the assistance of Maine
Community Foundation (MCF). Currently 20
accounts are set up with over $2.9 million, and all
but 4 of these accounts are generating enough income
annually for a scholarship, or in some cases multiple
scholarships. An endowment fund should have
$25,000 to be able to generate enough earnings to
support an annual $1,000 scholarship, the minimum
that the Association likes to provide to a student.
We started working with MCF in 2003, with
the Houlton High School Alumni Association
account, which holds approximately $187,000. In
those 19 years, almost $54,000 has been paid out
for scholarships, projects, and/or programs which
HHSAA has supported at Houlton High School.
A year later, and thanks to some generous donors, we
were able to add two more accounts:
The Henry G., Elizabeth R., and Janet A. White
Fund was our first large donation and continues to be
one of our largest accounts with $659,000. We cannot
put into words how blessed and thankful we are to
Henry White for remembering HHSAA and getting
our endowment started. Henry was the Class of 1929,
his wife, Elizabeth was Class of 1939 and daughter,
Janet, was Class of 1966. Since June 2005, over 65

scholarships have been
awarded from this fund,
totaling over $385,000.
The family of James F
McPartland was right
behind the Whites setting
up an endowment as an
80th birthday gift for their
father, which later received
memorials for James and
his wife, Lois, when they
passed. The McPartland family continues to add to
the fund. James was a member of the Class of 1942.
Since June 2005, over 16 scholarships have been
awarded from this fund, totaling almost $27,000.
The Patricia Donovan Fitzpatrick & Michael
Donovan Family Fund started in December 2013,
as a nod to Patricia from her brother, for all she does
for HHSAA. Since that time, many of Patricia’s HHS
Class of 1963 classmates have donated to this account
to also acknowledge Patricia’s work as their class rep.
Brother Michael is a member of the Class of 1957.
Currently 20 accounts are set up
with over $2.9 million . . .
In 2014, the Neil & Pam Cowperthwaite Family
Fund was started. In 2020, its first scholarship was
awarded. Neil is a member of the Class of 1964 and
Pam (Perfitt) is Class of 1977. In total, 4 scholarships
have been awarded to date. Another shining example
of the creation of a named scholarship fund that we
strive to promote to others as much as possible.
In that same year, the Class of 1969 was the first class
to start an endowment fund. They continue to work
on raising funds for the account by contributing
