Letter from the Editor
Dear Readers:
Wow! What an exciting time for the Association this past summer. An all-time high number of
scholarships were given out - $100,000 to be exact. 25 years ago, in its infancy, the Association gave
out one $500 scholarship! But even more important than the dollar amount given out this summer
at Senior High Last Chapel is the fact that $25,000 of the total was awarded as 4-year renewable
scholarships. While a $2,500 or $5,000 scholarship is certainly very helpful to students, a $10,000
or $20,000 can be a very deciding factor about which school to go to by the graduate. While not all
future scholarships will be multi-year, the scholarship committee is looking into ways that more each
year can be in the form of renewables. Just another way that the Association is “SUCCESSFUL
BECAUSE OF YOU!”
After a 7-year hiatus (two additional years due to Covid-19), the Association was back with its Multi
Year Reunion Gala Week Celebration. Class memories in store front windows, school tours, class
reunions, alumni soccer game, the always fun Alumni Variety Show culminating with the Multi-
Year Gala Reunion held at the Millar Civic Center. Look for pictures and stories throughout this
newsletter. A wonderful time was had by all, and it was a great feeling to be an alumnus of this great
school. Many thanks go out to the Association’s Gala Planning Committee.
Our endowments are at an all -time high, although as most investments, the past few months
have seen its ups and downs, but it continues to do better than the benchmarks established by our
Community Foundation.
This is the 26th year issue of the North Star News and we need help as it is getting more
sophisticated and informative with each issue. We need you to be a worker for our cause!
➣ We need articles written and submitted by folks on a regular basis. Articles can be on
any subject that would be of interest to the readership. Articles of your memories
of your time growing up in Houlton are of great interest. Don’t wait until a
newsletter is about due to be worked on. Write your article anytime and submit
it along with pictures and we will put it in our files and use it in future
newsletters. Summit articles on a regular basis as Rick Nickerson ’81 has
been doing about his Houlton area book reviews.
➣ Great news! Rick Nickerson has agreed to interview and write
the biographical stories on future “Spotlight on Alums” for the
newsletter. I think you will agree that he is an excellent
storyteller/author from his great story in this issue on Dr.
John Carson ’62. If you have a classmate that you
would like to have reflected in a Spotlight article,
simply email me with the person’s name and
class year, a brief description of why you
think the person would make a great
Spotlight candidate and contact
information so that Rick can get
in touch with your alum.
