Two “70s We saw the “little gym” where we ate countless tuna

tables and chairs and cash registers which we did not have

Memory Lane of bleachers).
By Cindy Milton ‘70 and Paula Woodworth ‘70
On March 19th, Paula Woodworth and I went on a trip
down memory lane at Houlton High School. We entered
the building and went straight to the offi ce to obtain our hall
passes. I really half expected Mr. Scott to come out and want
to know what we were doing out of our classrooms. We were
able to wander down the halls, observing that a lot had not
changed since 1970. I noticed all the posters and students’
art work and papers hanging in all the hallways. e posters
were encouraging to students to be kind, helpful, do their
best etc.
Many gym classes were taken in the gym, wearing those
dreadful blue one piece gym suits. I imagine you girls all
remember those; as well as many basketball games watched
as we cheered on our boys to victory! e new Auditorium
is wonderful. Such a nice addition for the students and
community. I remember study hall in the old auditorium
which had very poor lighting.
e Art Dept. was awesome! I would have liked to try art
when I was in school. We were invited into the Home
Economics Class and saw students at work making quilts. I
remember from Home Economics that we made muffi ns and
a blouse out of bandana hankies which we had to wear to
school. (Not a proud moment for me!! )
Since we were bus students, we always entered the school
via the doors outside the cafeteria. We bought lunch tokens
at a little window on the way in to turn the corner to go to
our lockers and classes. e lockers were the same, mine was
across from shop class but I think I started out in another hall
locker when I fi rst started in the 8th grade.
