Also selected to the Class C all-tourney team were
senior guard Nolan Porter and senior forward Nick
Brewer of Houlton along with Isaac Wardwell of
George Stevens Academy and senior guard Max
Woodman of Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.
Porter complemented Gentle’s midrange game
and driving ability with his long-range shooting,
averaging 14.7 ppg with 22 points in the
quarterfi nals and 14 points with four 3-pointers in
the title game.

Porter receives McDonald’s All-State Academic Award
Nolan Porter, Houlton senior, was honored Friday,
March 8, at the 2019 Maine McDonald’s/Maine
Association of Basketball Coaches banquet at the Anah
Shrine Hall in Bangor.
Porter was one of 14 senior boys from around the state
named to the 2019 Maine High School Boys All-State
Academic team.
Porter, a senior captain for Houlton, helped the
Shires to the Class C 2019 Northern Maine Regional
champions and state runners-up titles. Houlton beat
Lee Academy, 74-55 in the preliminary round; defeated
Penobscot Valley, 72-32 in the quarterfi nals; bested
Sumner, 60-34 in the semifi nals; and defeated three-
time defending state champs George Stevens Academy,

In the state Class C contest, Houlton fell 61-49 to
Winthrop. e team fi nished with a record of 18-5.
Porter’s best game in the tournament came in the quarterfi nals against Penobscot Valley when he led the Shires with
22 points, including four 3-pointers.
During the season, he averaged 12 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists. A sharp-shooter from behind the 3-point
arc, Porter made 51 3-pointers during the season (44 percent) and was even more impressive from the foul line,
making 91 percent of his free throws.
Along with the academic honor, Porter was named to the 2019 BDN Northern Maine Regional Class C all-
tournament team, was a 2019 All-Aroostook player, and a second team Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) all-star.
Porter has been accepted and is planning to attend Rochester Institute of Technology in New York in the fall, where
he will study software engineering.
