GHOSTS
Of the Shiretown
Photos chosen and submitted by Henry Gartley ’77
Editors Note: On the Mechanic Street picture I remember a lot of those buildings. The blacksmith shop was owned by
Frank Hawkins, at least in its last days. Besides being a blacksmith, he was a farrier. I remember riding my horse to him
when I was 7 or 8 to have his shoes replaced every so often. Like all smithies he was a burly guy -large arms and a burly
chest. He would have the horse’s hoof up on his thighs trimming and fitting the shoe. The horse would act up and try to kick
him. He wrapped the horse’s tail around the leg he was working on. When the horse tried to kick him again, he almost
pulled his tail out. There was no more kicking!
