Meet Your Board - Behind the Scenes

                                                                                    Written by Rachel Fitzpatrick '93

This is the fourth installment in the series of articles to introduce, honor and thank a special group of individuals. These
individuals have been, or are currently, members of the HHSAA board. Many have been members of the board for a long
period of time and a few for only a couple years, but all have added to HHSAA and where we are today as an organization. The
first installment looked at our beginning and founder, Lauren Peabody Fitzpatrick ’86, and current president, Nancy Ketch
’82, and the second installment paid tribute to the lives of two former members who both enjoyed the multi-year reunions,
Paul Porter ’51 and Nancy Russell Hutchinson ’56. The third installment was on a couple of our “strong but silent” members,
Jerry York ’70 and Patricia Donovan Fitzpatrick ‘63. This installment looks at two vastly different personalities, one has been
active from the early days of the first newsletter and could not wait to talk to me in person, and the other came on about eight
years later, is very prolific but was not looking forward to being interviewed. Both have done a lot for HHSAA in their own
ways. I hope you enjoy this look behind the scenes.

                                                  Lorraine Davis Quint ’55,

                                                  1999-Present / Class of 1955 newsletter rep

I had the wonderful privilege to sit down with another lovely lady, who has
watched me grow up, leave Houlton, and return home, Mrs. Lorraine (Davis)
Quint of the 1955 HHS Class and class rep on the HHSAA newsletter since
the first edition. What a wonderful chat we had while her son, Michael ’77,
and husband, Wayne, sat in the living room watching tv. Many of you will
recall her husband as a former HHS driver’s education teacher.
Lorraine is the daughter of Walter ’34 & Ruth (Harvey) Davis. Her brothers,
Gary ’54 and Walter Jr (aka Pal) ‘56 and sister, Marilyn (Davis) Daniels
Left to right: Peter ’80, Lorraine ’55, ‘53, all attended HHS. Pal and Marilyn have both passed now with Marilyn
Michael ’77 (in the back), Wayne (aka Mr.
Quint) and Matthew ’83. being the most recent in August 2020. Our condolences to the family.
Lorraine recalls one special teacher from HHS, Mr. Bill Jones, who came
to HHS as a first-year teacher of US History. She remembers Jones as being a wonderful teacher, who was also a World War II
veteran having served in France during the war. Lorraine also has memories of taking care of the Jones’ children but especially
keeping in touch with Bill as he moved on from HHS, first to Bar Harbor and then to work in Portland at the YMCA.
After graduating from HHS in 1955, Lorraine attended Gorham State Teachers College (now known as the University of
Southern Maine). In August 1957, Lorraine married a Hodgdon High graduate, Wayne Quint, and they spent a year teaching
in New Hampshire before returning to Houlton. Once back in Houlton, Wayne spent 5 years teaching English at Houlton HS
before changing to physical education and driver’s education, of which so many of our alum remember Mr. Quint for, as well
as long time athletic director. During this time, Lorraine and Wayne also raised 3 sons: Michael ’77, Peter ’80 and Matthew
’83. Lorraine did some substitute teaching during this time at both the high school and elementary levels, but she never went
into her sons’ classes. I recall having Lorraine as a substitute teacher at HHS a few times. She does have many stories to tell
about her substituting days though and every one brings a smile to her face.

During my early years (under 10 years old), I was privileged to sit behind the Quints at church every Sunday and watch their
boys grow taller alongside my older brothers. Soon it was just Lorraine and Wayne, but every so often one of the sons would
return to mass with them, though I could not tell them apart, except the “military son” in his clean, crisp uniform. I later
learned the “military son” was Matthew who had joined the US Marines before coming home and serving 20+/- years with the
Houlton Police Department. Now Matt enjoys a calmer career working for the Houlton parks and rec department, walking his
