Answers to the Fall/Winter ‘22
Test Your Memory
Wow! No winners this issue either. What is happening to all the
Sherlock Holmes out there in Alumni land?? I am worried. Again, this
could have been solved with good old fashion sleuth work. All except
maybe question 3.
HINT: Paul McGillicuddy was a good hint to get you started, but no one
grabbed ahold of it and went with it.

WE ASKED THESE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS PICTURE:
1. What is the structure engulfed in flames?
2. What month, day and year was the fire?
3. What was the significance of the aftermath of the fire?
4. What hint is contained elsewhere in this newsletter?
THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS:
• The buildings were the structures of the former Houlton Grange Store located on the block between Bangor
Street and Green Street and fronting Grange Street. The hint of Paul McGillicuddy was used as he was the former
manager of the Grange upon the death of his father-in-law, Byron Stewart, in 1943. The store was at one time the
largest Grange in the world.
• The sad but memorable day was December 25, 1960 – Christmas Day!
• The significant aftermath of the fire was that it was the beginning of the end of the Grange in Houlton. There was
a small Grange Meeting Hall facing Green Street that remained, that had been vacant for many years and was torn
down a few years ago. The Grange Hall stage curtain was salvaged and ultimately ended up in an antique store in
East Texas. It was purchased by Jamie Millar and donated to the Aroostook Historical and Art Museum in Houlton.
• The hint was the column “The Grange Curtain” which was part of Paula
Woodworth’s new series called Around Town and was on page 13 of the Fall/ Alumni Board Members
