Answers to the Fall/Winter ‘24

        Test Your Memory

We were back last issue with the “Test” after a brief absence in the
Spring/Summer ’24 magazine. As you know by now, the “Test” takes
some sleuth work to solve and alas, Sleuths are not faring too well. The
score was Contest: 5 Stumps to Sleuth’s 1solve.
Let’s see where you Sherlock Holmes’s stand as of the Fall/Winter ’24’s
        quiz.
Based on the picture of this distinguished dude we asked 3 questions:

        1. Who is this gentleman?

        2. What is he known for?
        3. About what time in Houlton’s history was his vision accomplished?

Wow! We were generous. We offered 2 bonus points for just providing
some additional interesting information on him.
We even gave the location to find information on him in the museum’s
        website.
Well, hers’s the “Rest of the Story!”
The gentleman’s name is Dr. Thomas S. Dickison who came to Houlton in 1893 from Woodstock, NB via his graduation/
internship at Bellvue Hospital in New York.
He was the first person in Houlton to provide x-ray facilities for his patients, and he was the founder of The Aroostook
        Hospital located on School Street.
He opened his large home to emergency patients in 1903 and built a 10-bed hospital on property he purchased near
his home on Bird Street sometime between 1903 and 1911 at which time he added a second floor to the hospital
        creating an additional 16 beds.

He was a very interesting man and important visionary for Houlton’s early health care.

        THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS:
Well did we have any winners in this issue? First, I must apologize as my computer developed a mind of its own and
deleted a few of my newsletter files, one being the sole person who attempted to solve this “test’. I believe I remember
her name. I am sure it was Betsy Mercer Lane (forgive me if I am wrong about this). She answered all the questions
with a very qualified early Houlton mover and shaker I remember. I can’t remember the person’s name suffice to say he
        was not Dr. Dickison.
However, since she is the only one that has tried to solve a recent “Test Your Memory” and her answer showed she did
research we are going to give her this one and she wins the Gold Star.
