But that experience may have helped him later on. One of his
assignments during his active duty in the navy was in Washington,
D.C. in Legislative Affairs, where he dealt with members of Congress
and their staffs.
Dave used his ROTC scholarship to attend Miami University
in Oxford, Ohio where he earned a BA degree and became a
commissioned officer. In the summer, he would have Navy
Midshipman training experiences. In one of those years, he was
assigned to an aircraft carrier (Kearsage) in the South China Sea. His
duty took him to Sasabo, Japan where he spent a day with another Dave sitting on the wing of his airplane. He still loves flying.

of a Navy minesweeper stationed there. Making the Houlton High connection even stronger,
Torrey was the older brother of another member of the HHS class of 1960, Rachel Sylvester,
now Rachel Good.

Dave met his future wife, Susan Dogherty, at the State Music Festival held in Houlton in
1960. She was the concert mistress of the All State orchestra, where Dave played cornet in
the All State Band. They have two sons, Peter in Denver and Christopher in Minneapolis.

Besides having a BA from Miami U., Dave has an MA degree from George Washington
Univ. in Washington, D.C. He also has completed his course work for a PHD (ABD—all but of different
dissertation) from Miami U.
In the past 18 years, as Principal of the Lawrence Group, he has provided consultation with opportunities,
presidents and chief development officers of medical and higher education institutions to
produce successful programs with strategic solicitation strategies for major giving. At home, he
continues to serve on area boards and health organizations He has also been helpful with fund small enough
raising guidance to the HHS alumni association.
Growing up in Houlton offered a great foundation for Dave, including opportunities to work.
