Sadie's Ladies
HOMEGROWN
HOULTON
By Paula Woodworth ‘70
When I lived in the South, everyone looked for the "Hot Now" sign to be lit up at the local Krispy
Kreme so they could get fresh
doughnuts. Here in Houlton we have a little different
method to keep track of the fresh doughnut situation. We
follow our noses. Is the smell of molasses doughnuts wafting
through the Square? Must be Wednesday. Do I detect
pumpkin as I walk down Water Street? It's my favorite
Saturday treat. Is there any better smell than the one from
Sadie's when they are making doughnuts?
The current owners are Robin Green (1992) and Kristie
Fitzpatrick (1993). They have worked together before at
Andy's IGA Deli and the Houlton Elementary School
cafeteria. Now they are the owners of Sadie's and continuing
the tradition of providing Houlton with tasty treats. They
told me they used to joke about buying Sadie's. When the
opportunity presented itself in 2016, they became the new
owners.
Owning a busy bakery is hard work but the ladies get along
and work well together, and they are doing it for themselves.
They hope to work at the bakery until they retire. They also
said they have supportive husbands (who are also HHS

alums)- Marty (1993) and Aaron (1991). Sharon O'Donnell
`73, a former owner, is on call if needed. The ladies agree
that having supportive customers is one of the best parts of Sadie's Bakery - Downtown Houlton
owning the business. As we all know, Sadie's customers are very
loyal. Some of the favorite foods are the Italian sandwiches, oatmeal bread, pastry squares and "hockey pucks". Most people
have their favorite flavor of doughnut-molasses and chocolate are the most popular. And the bakers have their own specialties.
Kristie likes to make bread while Robin prefers making doughnuts.
We talked about high school memories. Robin's favorite teacher was Mrs. Jordan, her English teacher. She thought she was
"so cool". Kristie liked Morris Cassidy in the 7th grade. He always had a "Thought for the Day" on the board. She also
remembered having a hard transition coming to Houlton from Monticello.
Robin and Kristie view Sadie's as a "hole in the wall" built on tradition. They wouldn't want a new location and I think their
customers would agree. Houlton is a town that loves tradition. Long live Sadie's!
