combined with $1,750 from the Alumi Association.
The first $1,000 scholarship was presented from the Cowperthwaite Family Scholarship Fund to Elizabeth
Dunn who is studying Anthropology at the University of Vermont. Elizabeth also received $1,750 from the
Alumni Association.
Kelsey Sewall was the first ever recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Class of 1964 Fund. Karen
Cyr Gallop from the Class of ’64 made the presentation to Kelsey to commemorate the occasion. Kelsey
was also awarded $1,750 from the Alumni Association. Kelsey is studying to be a Medical Assistant at
Northern Maine Community College (NMCC).
John and Linda Nedeau Carson made the trip to
Houlton from their home in Chelmsford, MA to
present the inaugural $1,000 scholarship from
the Class of 1962 Fund to Rhetta Vega who is
attending the University of New England (UNE)
for Microbiology. The Class of ’62 raised the
money for their named scholarship fund faster
than any other class and, during his remarks, John
challenged other classes to follow their example
and also establish a fund to remember their class
and support future graduates. Rhetta was also
presented with a scholarship from the Alumni
Association in the amount of $1,750.
Over the last couple of years, former Houlton
High Principal and Superintendent of SAD 29
David Wiggin provided funds for a scholarship Linda & John Carson '62 present class of 1962 scholarship
to remember his wife, Alison Wiggin, who was a
beloved English teacher at Houlton High School.
Two $1,000 scholarships were presented in her memory with one going to Hunter Drake who is attending
NMCC for Auto Technology. The other was presented to Logan Beaton who is studying Criminal Justice at
Thomas College. Both Hunter and Logan also received awards of $1,750 from the Alumni Association.
A $1,000 scholarship was presented to Emily Roy from the Henry, Elizabeth & Janet White Fund and was
combined with $1,750 from the Alumni Association. Emily is attend NMCC to be an Emergency Medical
Technician (EMT).
The Houlton Water Company provided funds for two $2,500 scholarships this year. The first of those
was presented to Lauren Swimm who is studying Criminal Justice at Washington County Community
College (WCCC). The other award went to Nicholas Brewer who is attending Thomas College for
Sports Management. Lauren and Nicholas were also each awarded $250 scholarships from the Alumni
Association.
When the Houltonopoly game was developed, it was intended as a fundraiser to supplement the Annual
Fund and provide even more money for scholarships. We were happy to present the first “Houltonopoly”
scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to Brittany Fitzpatrick. Brittany is the granddaughter of our Secretary
Patty Donovan Fitzpatrick ’63 who was there to make the presentation.
What a wonderful night it was to provide so much assistance to these talented students from our alma
mater. With so many of the named scholarship funds reaching their goals to start presenting awards, we
anticipate the amount of scholarships we can provide to grow even more. Our sincere and profuse thanks
to all of you who support the Alumni Association financially to make these scholarships possible! You are
changing lives!
And, our best wishes to the entire class of 2019! We wish great success and happiness in your futures
and look forward to your many years as productive alums!
